The following are cars that can be accurately modeled currently in N-scale using available car sides, kits and ready-to-run models.  The list below are recommendations only, based on the best information that I have on-hand.  If you know of additions or corrections that need to be made, please email me by clicking here.  Car sides are intended to be added to American Limited Models core kits, except as noted.

NKP Car Co. no longer manufactures N-scale car sides and have no interest in restarting their production.  It may be possible to find sides for both the C&O and NKP cars on eBay, with one seller by the name of "South Park Hobbies" sometimes having some available.  They are included in these listings purely as a reference.

Also, corrugated passenger cars formerly produced by Rowa for Model Rectifier Corp. and Concor based on C&O prototypes, which are no longer produced, are also included in these listings and can sometimes be found at trainshows and on eBay.  These models are reasonable stand-ins and are also listed here purely as a reference as "Rowa".

Microscale has announced that they will be releasing a decal set for PC Metroliner and passenger cars which had the black letterboard box and white lettering, the set number will be 60-1383 once released.

* - A note about Laser Horizons sides.  These sides are all custom made to order so when ordering be sure to not only specify scale but what type of skirting (if any) desired.  Sides come with clear plastic glass backing and should be painted before being added to the core being used.

** - Like the Laser Horizons sides these sides are made to order so be as specific as possible when ordering.  It should be noted that the Union Station Products are Craftsman-level kits.  Some clean-up of parts and assembly is required, and care must be exercised when assembling these sides because of the delicate parts.

*** - These cars, when rebuilt, had the same profile as lightweight equipment, but with most if not all rivet detail remaining after rebuilding.  Archer Surface Transfers could be of use in replicating this detail.

Note 1:  The MicroTrains Plan 3959 observation car can be a good starting point for modeling Penn Central business cars, with the AC air duct being appropriate for PC (ex-NYC) 30.  Other cars can be done but to be accurate a modeler would have to remove the air duct for the cars to truly be closer to the prototype.

Note 2:  These shells are produced for IHP by Shapeways but no specific chassis is specified.  It may be possible to use a Kato RDC chassis to power these but this has not been verified.  For the Silverliners the pantograph is not included but it is possible that the one on Bachmann's HHP-8 electric motor could be a reasonable stand-in.  For other possibilities, visit the thread on nScale.net by Clicking Here.  While the Kato RDC chassis could be used the shell will not attach to the chassis.

Note 3:  Ex-PRR coaches 1400 - 1424 were former NYC 3003, 3117, 3064, 3080, 3039, 3050, 3097, 3115, 3023, 3013, 3015, 3036, 3038, 3046, 3055, 3056, 3062, 3076, 3093, 3094, 3112, 3128, 3130 and 3152.

Note 6:  PC 2115 - 2139 are ex-NYC 1715 - 1739, which were rebuilt from 3019, 3012, 3081, 3142, 3019, 3041, 3132, 3138, 3072, 3104, 3048, 3069, 3042, 3030, 3079, 3052, 3148, 3089, 3150, 3134, 3141, 3077, 3124 and 3108.  When rebuilt most lost their corrugation due to heavy corrosion of the lower sides.

Note 7:  PC 2140 - 2151 are ex-NYC 2668, 2647, 2650, 2651, 2669, 2653, 2654, 2658 and 2660 - 2663.

Note 8:  PC coaches in the 2160 - 2164, 2170 - 2175, 2180 - 2185, 2460 - 2462, 3270, 3271, 3274 - 3276 series were owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.  PC coaches in the 2167 - 2169 series. 2176, 2177, 2400 - 2403, 2464 and 2465 were owned by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Note 9:  PC 2160 - 2164 were ex-SLSF 1250 Olivette, 1252 , 1254 Ferguson, 1255 Kirkwood and 1558 Webster Groves.  The M&R sides could be used as reasonable stand-ins for these cars, with the center portion of the skirting removed from the sides.

Note 10:  PC coaches 2167 - 2175 were ex-L&N 3205, 3211, 3212, 3100, 3201, 3202, 3207, 3208, 3214, 3213 and 3215.  While these cars were corrugated they had painted sides because of the aluminum corrugation and as such these sides could be used to represent these coaches painted, without corrugation, or with Union Station Products "Budd" corrugation added to the sides.
